Founded in 1956, the School of Radiologic Technology at the University
of Mississippi Medical Center is the only hospital-based radiologic technology
program in the State of Mississippi. The program provides a strong didactic
and clinical-based curriculum in the field of radiologic technology.
Dedicated to the promotion of health, the radiographer, like other members of
the medical field, accepts the challenge of serving others. Radiographers provide
patient care essential to radiologic procedures, while adhering to the principles
of radiation protection for the patient, self, and others.
Recent changes in technology, the ever-increasing use of highly sophisticated
equipment and the expansion of radiology departments throughout the nation have
created a sharp demand for individuals educated in this field. Radiographers
may perform specialized techniques such as quality assurance, fluoroscopy and
pediatric, geriatric, trauma, and surgical radiography. Advanced imaging modalities
include mammography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),
ultrasound, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy and cardiovascular/interventional
technology (CVIT).
As a member of a technically specialized branch of medicine, a radiographer performs
various procedures to produce quality medical images and acts as an assistant
to physicians who specialize in the use of x-ray for diagnosis, prevention, and
treatment of disease. The advancing field of radiologic technology has proven
to be a rewarding profession for those who are seeking to make a difference in
the lives of others.
